Part 1: Is Mohammad a true prophet of God?
While our Muslim friends would certainly answer “Yes”,we as Christians, are to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1) and not to take any theological claim,or any claim in general without evidence.
Even tho we know historically that much of what we know about Mohammad’s life are latter opinions from eight and ninth century, contained in the “Hadith”,transmited by “Isnad”,or,chains of narration, non written chains of narration that is,one of the most unreliable methods, rejected by any serious historian today. Just how horrendous this method is,is clearly shown in the example of the Quran itself, which was transmitted in a similar fashion, namely as:
“The famous librarian, al-Nadim, in the year 375 A.H./987 A.D. listed a whole series of books dealing with these different collections (of Qurans) and the differences between them. He records that Abdullah ibn Mas’ud’s version of the Qur’an had 110-112 suras while Ubayy ibn Ka’b’s collection had 116, that these collections had a different ordering of the suras and that there were variants in the verses. See, Al-Nadim, The Fihrist of al-Nadim – A Tenth Century survey of Muslim Culture, New York: Columbia University Press, pp. pp. 58-61 and 79.”-Brackets mine
However even tho we know that much of what we know about Mohammad and his teachings is in doubt, from what we have we should easily be able to conclude on whether or not he was a prophet.
What many Muslims call “Surat Ul-Tawhid”,that is,Surah Al Ikhlas, the 112th Sura of the today’s Quran contains four ayah(verses) and says this:
1. Say he is Allah, one of. 2.Allah on whom all depend. 3.He begets not, nor is He begotten. 4.And no-one is similar to Him.
Surah 19 says in verse 35- It beseems not Allah that He should take to Himself a son, glory to be Him; when He has decreed a matter He only says to it “Be,” and it is.
And verses 88-89 – And they say: The Beneficent Allah has taken (to Himself) a son. Certainly you have made an abominable assertion.
Anybody who has even basic knowledge of Christian theology knows that these statements deny the very core of Christian belief, that Christ is “Monogenes Huios” The only unique (begotten) Son of God. And thus apostle John writes- 1 John 2:22-23 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
Thus it is made plain to us that Mohammad was actually an antichrist and a servant of Satan who is burning in hell, prepared for his master and his angels. He was most assuredly not a prophet of God,however we shall go much more into detail on this.
We know that Deuteronomy 18:20 states: But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’
Let’s prove that Mohammad fits both of these signs of false propethood, that he
1. Spoke in His Name what God commanded him not to speak
2. Spoke in the name of other gods
Now even without going into any of the Islamic history,we know that God would never command to a prophet a denial of The Deity and The Sonship of Christ, thus clearly he spoke in the name of God what God commanded him not to,yet he presented his God as the God of Moses,God of Christians and Jews. But since we know that Allah is not such a God,we can only conclude that he spoke in the name of other gods.
Now going into Islamic sources it is made rather plain to us that he fulfills both signs of a false prophet as stated in Deuteronomy 18:20
By Mohammad’s self admission,we know that he fabricated things in the name of God,namely we find written in the history of Al-Tabari,a student of Al-Hanbali,founder of one of the 4 Islamic schools of thought and a “Sheikh Ul-Islam” a statement of Mohammad in which he says:
“I have fabricated things against Allah and have imputed to him words which he has not spoken.” (Al Tabari, The History of Al-Tabari, vol. 6, p.111)
Mohammad clearly rings bells when it comes to the first sign of false prophethood according to the Islamic sources, now let’s take a look and see if he spoke in the name of other gods, according to the Islamic sources.
“While Muhammad was in Mecca, his followers were few, his movement grew painfully slowly and he, too, felt the pain of estrangement from his tribe. According to early and treasured biographical and historical accounts of Muhammad, authored by competent Muslim scholars (such as writings of at-Tabari and Ibn Sa’d), Muhammad longed for better relations and reconciliation with his community. Thereafter, the accounts continue, God revealed Surah 53 to
Muhammad up to and including vss. 19, 20. These two verses read:
Have ye thought upon al-Lat and al-Uzza And Manat, the third, the other? (53:19,20)
Then, originally, the verses (known today as the satanic verses) followed:
“These are the exalted cranes (intermediaries) Whose intercession is to be hoped for.”
“But Muhammad soon retracted the reconciliation—how soon is not clear. For the account continues that Jibril (Gabriel), the angel of revelation, informed Muhammad that Satan had used Muhammad’s desire for reconciliation with the pagan leaders to insert into the revelation of God the verses about the interceding cranes, otherwise called “the satanic verses”.”
(Quotes from Answering-Islam.org)
Thus we also know that Mohammad also rings bells when it comes to the second sign of a false prophet according to Deuteronomy,he spoke in the name of Satan,a false god.
Mohammad also denied the Deity of Christ,in Surah 5:72-73 he states: They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah , my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers. They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the third of three.” And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
Now obviously here we see Mohammad’s complete misunderstanding of The Trinity (also see 5:116 where he mistakes the Holy Spirit for Mary) and rejection of The Deity of Christ, thus completely disqualifying him from the potential of the office of prophethood.
As Jesus said, whoever rejects that he is the “I AM”-Yahweh,is lost (John 8:24,58)
Part 2: Does the Bible Predict Mohammad?
Quran states in 7:157 : Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet (Mohammad), whom they find written with them in Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him – it is those who will be the successful.
So we see that it is not simply that a Muslim’s faith can be strengthened if he can find Mohammad in the Bible, rather,a Muslim MUST find Mohammad in the Bible otherwise Mohammad was lying that this revelation of his was from God.
These are 4 verses that I would like to address here, the ones that Muslims would most commonly misuse, abuse and twist,to their own destruction, to try to prove that this false prophet and antichrist is found in the Bible: John 14:16,Deuteronomy 18:18,Songs of Solomon 5:16,John 1:21 (there are indeed more, but of course, for a detailed refutation on any of these, you can look at the works of our brothers in Christ,Sam Shamoun and David Wood)
Perhaps the most ridiculous one indeed is Songs of Solomon 5:16,where Muslims try to assert that the word mahamadim, which in Hebrew,in this context, means lovely,is the name of Mohammad,so the verse reads: His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem.
Before we start with the demolition of such a poor attempt,we should note that Muslims often criticize Songs of Solomon to show that the Bible contains,as they would put it “pornographic content”,I find it very amusing that they managed to find their prophet in this “horrendous work”.
Just from the purely grammatical standpoint “He is all together Mohammad” would not make any sense whatsoever, neither from contextual sense,we know that this is a song by Solomon’s wife,to Solomon himself,it has absolutely nothing to do with any false prophet. Also it is a phonetic fallacy, meaning that it is a fallacy of concluding that if something sounds the same,it must mean the same thing. Just to show the absurdity of the muslim argumentation,if we are to follow in their footsteps, when a Muslim says Allahu Akbar (Allah is greater) I must conclude that he is either proclaiming a curse upon some mouse,or that Allah is a mouse, for the Hebrew word alah means a curse, and ahbar means a mouse.
To quote Answering-Islam:
“Some refer chapter 5:16, of the Song of Songs, to Muhammad, simply because in the Hebrew the word mahamaddim, “delights,” “delightfulnesses,” occurs there, and is derived from the same root, but we find that the word in Hebrew is a common, and not a proper noun (i.e. not a name), as the use of the plural here shows.
The same word occurs again as a common noun in Hosea 9:6,16; 1 Kings 20:6; Lamentations 1:10,11; 2:4; Isaiah 64:10; 2 Chronicles 36:19; Ezekiel 24:16,21,25. In the last passage (Ezekiel 24:16, “the desire of thine eyes”) it is applied to a woman, Ezekiel’s wife (compare verse 18), and to the sons and daughters of the idolatrous Jews (verse 25). It would be just as wise to apply the word to Muhammad HERE as in the Song of Songs.
In Arabic many words are formed from the same root , but they do not on that account denote Muhammad. An ignorant Muslim might just as well assert that Muhammad’s name occurred in Surah 1, Al Fatihah, verse 1: Al hamdo lillahi Rabbi ‘lalamin (“Praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds”). In the same way a Hindu might assert that the name of Ram or some other of his deities was mentioned in the Qur’an, because in Sura 30, Ar-Rum, verse 1, we read ” the Romans have been overcome,” where Arabic dictionaries give “Rum” as if derived from the root “ram”. This kind of argument is unworthy of men of learning and judgement.”
Moving onto Deuteronomy 18:18,which states:I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
Now completely ignoring the fact that Mohammad denies that God is a Father, which Moses clearly affirms, that he made false prophesies (Surah 30:1-4) etc. we previously quoted Deuteronomy 18:20,which occurs just a few verses after this and clearly disqualifies Mohammad as being a prophet of God.
Furthermore,he is not one of the brothers,he is not one of the Israelites and thus is further disqualified from this position. The question is,who is then, this prophet? Well, the Bible tells us, in the book of Acts 3:19-26:
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”
It is the Lord Jesus Christ, the only unique Son of God!
Moving on,John 1:21 states: And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
The context is the Jews questioning John The Baptist,so Muslims would try to eisegete Mohammad the false prophet in here and say that he is the prophet that the Jews were expecting.
However, this is quite clearly referring back to Deuteronomy 18:18 and that has already been refuted, but in the very same chapter of John,in John 1:45,it states: Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
So we have a reference to Deuteronomy 18,where Moses wrote of Jesus,Philip found the prophet that they were expecting. It was not the false prophet Mohammad.
And now as Coup De Grâce to the ridiculous Muslim position, we are going to go to John 14:16 and prove that the Muslims who have argued that this is Mohammad and those who have thought so are guilty of Shirk and thus are not Muslims anymore, cannot become ones again and are bound to hell-fire for eternity, according to Muslim theology.
John 14:16-17 says: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever–the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and He will be in you.
So here we see outright that the Spirit of Truth is already WITH THEM,the World cannot see him and he is omnipresent for he will be in them, wherever they are,at all times,in all places. Thus clearly, this cannot be Mohammad, furthermore, the verse 26 states: But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
So this Spirit is clearly The Holy Spirit, the eternal God and thus obviously the Mohammadan argument is sent down the cliff, however,a Muslim who argues this has committed Shirk for he assigned to Mohammad deity,by arguing that he is The Holy Spirit, furthermore,he affirmed that The Son is God,for in Islam, the prophets are sent in the name of Allah alone, read John 14:26 again and tell us in whose name is The Spirit sent? Also in John 15:26 we know that The Son also sends The Spirit: “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father–the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father–he will testify about me.
Thus without doubt affirming the deity of The Son since Allah alone can send prophets.
So a Muslim is left with this Triune deity of Father, Jesus and Mohammad, what a blasphemy in both Christianity and Islam, seems that Allah confused Mary(whom he also confused with Miriam) with The Spirit and today’s Muslims confuse The Holy and Eternal Spirit of God with a 7th century rapist, pedophile and a false prophet.
To end I will quote 2 Saints and their thoughts on Mohammad:
“On the other hand, those who founded sects committed to erroneous doctrines proceeded in a way that is opposite to this, the point is clear in the case of Muhammad. He seduced the people by promises of carnal pleasure to which the concupiscence of the flesh goads us. His teaching also contained precepts that were in conformity with his promises, and he gave free rein to carnal pleasure. In all this, as is not unexpected, he was obeyed by carnal men. As for proofs of the truth of his doctrine, he brought forward only such as could be grasped by the natural ability of anyone with a very modest wisdom. Indeed, the truths that he taught he mingled with many fables and with doctrines of the greatest falsity. He did not bring forth any signs produced in a supernatural way, which alone fittingly gives witness to divine inspiration; for a visible action that can be only divine reveals an invisibly inspired teacher of truth. On the contrary, Muhammad said that he was sent in the power of his arms—which are signs not lacking even to robbers and tyrants.”
-St. Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274), Theologian and Doctor of the Church. Quoted from his De Rationibus Fidei Contra Saracenos, Graecos, et Armenos and translated from Fr. Damian Fehlner’s Aquinas on Reasons for the Faith: Against the Muslims, Greeks, and Armenians (Franciscans of the Immaculate. 2002.).
“There is also the superstition of the Ishmaelites which to this day prevails and keeps people in error, being a forerunner of the Antichrist…. From that time to the present a false prophet named Mohammed has appeared in their midst. This man, after having chanced upon the Old and New Testaments and likewise, it seems, having conversed with an Arian monk, devised his own heresy. Then, having insinuated himself into the good graces of the people by a show of seeming piety, he gave out that a certain book had been sent down to him from heaven. He had set down some ridiculous compositions in this book of his and he gave it to them as an object of veneration.”
-St. John Damascene (d. 749), Syrian Arab Christian monk and scholar. Quoted from his book On Heresies under the section On the Heresy of the Ishmaelites (in The Fathers of the Church. Vol. 37. Translated by the Catholic University of America. CUA Press. 1958. Pages 153-160.)
